Charter or scheduled flight?

The travel industry often seems very complicated for those of us who planning vacations occasionally. Like it or not, the price of airline tickets account for much when it comes to shopping for a trip. One question that comes up frequently from travellers on this is the difference between scheduled and charter flights, as well as a good time to buy in order to have the ticket as lowest as possible.

Elyse, travel agent here at VarVacations answers some questions on the subject:

	- What is the difference between a charter and scheduled flights?

A scheduled flight is offered by an airline on a regular basis. These flights are sold directly through the airline or through a travel agency. Air Canada, West Jet or Delta Airlines offer, at times and at a fixed frequency flights to any destination. No matter if flight is full or that there is still available seats, the journey will be completed as planned.

The charter is for its part provided by an airliner (Canjet, Air Transat etc.) at the request of tour operators (TMR, Caribe Sol etc.) Operator buys a block of seats from airline and sell them either to the individual (flight portion only) or in all-inclusive package. These flights are not sold directly by the airline but rather through the wholesaler.

	- How to go about having the ticket the cheapest for a charter or scheduled flight?

Unlike the charter flight, scheduled flight offers different class; the ideal is to buy in advance as possible because it is generally the economic classes that are sold first. The rates do not change according to supply and demand.

In another hand, the charter will offer a cheaper rate depending of seats demand. There’s a simple reason: the wholesaler who bought a block of seats to the airline, he wants to liquidate all the places. Conversely, if demand is high, prices will rise. The ideal is to buy when the price fits your budget, knowing that rates may move upwards or downwards.

This area is uncertain and it is difficult to predict the ideal time to purchase a package or a ticket for a charter flight.

Travelling with children, some actions to take before your vacations

Planning a family trip, especially with young children, is not always easy. We must therefore have good planning and trying somehow to predict the unpredictable. Here are some tips to help you make the trip more enjoyable for you and your children ... and for other passengers!

Make sure you have ALL the necessary papers

Canada’s Foreign Affairs website provides extensive information about it. Any youth under the age of 18 must have their own passport. In some cases, especially for younger, it is also a good precaution to have the birth certificate on hand. This part could seem simple at first glance, but it can quickly become complicated if the trip is done with only one parent or legal tutor. In these cases, you must have minimally a letter of consent signed by all persons with legal rights for the minor (parent or guardian). This letter of consent must then be certified, for example by a notary or commissioner. You can find a consent sample form on our website.

Bring something to occupy travel time

Nobody likes to hear a child cry or scream for hours, especially in a confined space like an airplane cabin. Thanks to gadgets! They can now be of great help when traveling for several hours. If you have a tablet or a smart phone, there are thousands of games and applications you can install on. Make tests with your child a few days or weeks in advance.

Make sure first that your child finds an interest for more than 10 minutes, without letting it play continuously in the previous days. The latter will have an interest and an appetite for rediscovering this game if he knows only a small part. Take the opportunity to try all in "airplane mode" or without any network enabled. Many applications require a connection to be functional, even if it’s only to send you ads! Imagine the disappointment - and the crisis that may follow - if you and your child can see in full flight as promised that the game is suddenly non-functional.

Portable DVD systems can also be a good option. In addition, airlines are increasingly likely to provide in-flight entertainment systems. Learn about the options available before departure and on the accessories you will be allowed to use, especially if planning to use an electronic device that not all devices that offer electrical outlets.

	Have a B plan... and even a C plan

Regardless of age, a trip is a major change in habits and routine. You should therefore consider the reaction of your child is not one you're used to. This is sometimes a good idea to consider alternatives just in case. For example, bring ear plugs and eye-masks, which cost only a few bucks and take up very little space, can be very useful if you have to travel during night. You could even make a game at home to try the accessory in the weeks prior to departure. Games that will occupy the fingers as much as the mind, like mini puzzle, may be useful for enabling the fingers to move when we need be felt.

In some cases, you may also want to use some drugs to calm unruly youths. I suggest you read this blog post on l’Actualité site (French post). This one, of course, remains specific to each. Ask for a medical advice family doctor or pediatrician. If this is an intended route, it would be wise to make a test before departure, because sometimes it is the opposite effect to that desired to see happen. It is better to know before!

Good planning for your next family trip surely avoid many inconveniences. By cons that should not be done at the last minute. You will have time to test different scenarios and predict the maximum void. Bon voyage!

New canadian passports with electronic chip

Passport Canada has announced that by the end of 2012, the new passports will be equipped with an electronic chip, much like credit cards or debit have since some years. Several countries already use this technology, including U.S., UK and France. So, this new device will incorporate a technology already used elsewhere.

If you look at your current passport, you can see that the last two lines already contain information that can be read by specialized machines. The chip will basically content the same information. How useful? This enhances security because the information is duplicated and the chip is very difficult to duplicate or defraud.

But more importantly, this chip will also contain your photo in electronic format. This will be essential if, in a more or less distant future, government agencies wanted to establish electronic systems for facial recognition, it would be possible with this new electronic document.

To learn more about the new passport, I suggest this video posted by the federal agency.

How to filter search results by number of connections

If you prefer going to your destination without having any flight connections, it could seem a bit harder for you to compare the packages.

However, we have added a filter feature to out search results that will allow you to filter the connections easily.

First, input your search criterias on the home page of VarVacations.com or any other page that has a search form.

Then, top left corner of the search results, you will see a box that allows to filter connections: Show All Flights, or Show Only Direct Flights.

If you haven't filtered the search results and you want to confirm if a flight is direct or not, click on "continue" and you will see the flight schedule at the top.

Some Tours Operators will propose you different flight schedules. If it is the case for your package, click on the button "continue" and you will see a list like this one:

Have a great flight and great vacations !

I know this is obvious, but it's never a good idea to try to get illegal substances at customs at an airport.

Yet in 2011, more than 500,000 different items were seized by CATSA. Although the vast majority of these objects are very common and that their presence are in vast majority due to a misunderstanding of the rules (ex: scissors), some seized since 2010 are anything but ordinary. Here are some examples:

Two kilos of marijuana and 200 grams of cocaine were found concealed in a passenger's knee brace at Toronto Pearson.

At Calgary International, two bear bangers and a bear banger launcher were found in a passenger's carry-on baggage.

Screening Officers at Sandspit Airport in British Columbia were applauded by the RCMP for passing along information about passengers smuggling illegally acquired bear paws.

In Toronto, someone thought it would be a good idea to wrap a 9mm replica handgun in aluminum cans and hide it in a soft drink case in their checked bag.

A Screening Officer found a live bee in a plastic container strapped to a passenger's knee at Toronto Pearson.

ATMs are in our landscape for about 15 years. Since then, more and more automated systems have been added in our daily lives, like for returning cans at the grocery store or currency exchange machines to only name these examples.

Montreal airport fits right technology by providing terminals for lugage check. Although WestJet already offers this service at several airports, ADM is the first Canadian airport authority to support these self-service kiosks. Then it's up to airliners to connect with their own system to benefit their customers.

Once in place, your luggage registration is quite simple. Before moving on to your check-in counter, you simply have to place your luggage on the built-in scale, while leaving the optical drive to read the code of your ticket to identify you (e-tickets from your home printer are working). With these data on your flight and your luggage, the terminal will print a sticker that you can simply install by following the instructions. This processing was already done when you will present at the registration desk, the officer merely checked against the weight recorded.

Westjet has posted last year a demonstration of their system that I share here.

Will you be inclined to use these new self-service kiosks?

Few weeks ago, I spoked here about a Qubec's team which left for an expedition up to the summit of Aconcagua summit in Argentina. The expedition relatively well took place, because only one of 4 adventurers will have been able to go up to the summit.

Travels destinations must more than ever have an excellent reputation for successfully capture your interest. Among the criterion considered, mention responsible management of the beaches and the environment around the resort takes a little more important every year.

This is why certain certifications, such as blue flags, are created to provide recognition to resorts that meet some criterion such as: providing information on water quality, have a beach code and ensure a monitoring of coral reefs where appropriate.

This year, several destinations in Dominican Republic have obtained this certification, the Barcelo Bavaro Beach at Punta Cana, who obtained the title in 2011. These hotels are demonstrating their willingness to incorporate a minimum of rigor in their management methods.

For you, do these certifications have influence in selecting your next travel destination?

The most frequently asked questions and answers!

With 100 000 travels bookings every year, our travel agents team have to answer numerous questioning. Here are some frequently asked questions and the more commons responses.

	1) When and how do I make a seats preselecting?

In most cases, you should contact the airline directly to the seat selection, with different options:

 Air Transat: 1-877-872-6728 or www.airtransat.ca

 Sunwing Airlines: 1-800-761-1711 (www.flysunwing.ca)

 Westjet : 1-877-737-7002 or www.westjet.com

 Canjet: www.canjet.com or 1-866-447-7000

 Thomas Cook (Jazz’s airlines) : www.flyjazz.ca

Fees apply for many of these airlines. You can also pre-register 24 hours before departure or less directly on the website of the airliner. At this point you can make your seat selection for free.

	2) The price is not the same from one stage to another, it increased

Rates may change on a daily basis and even several times a day, depending of supply and demand, either upward or downward. These are the operators that set prices according to their inventory. The rate may change from step 2 "Results" or in step 3 "verification". This is why you must always click on "Book" to check the price and availability and for the right price in real time. Remember, information is updated very often!

	3) When will I receive my gift certificate?

In the vast majority of cases you will receive your gift certificate 6 to 8 weeks after the date of your return.

	5) I have a travel voucher, how can I apply it to a new reservation?

You can book through the Internet by paying your entire bill, if you're within 45 days of departure and send us your original travel credit obtained from www.voyagesarabais.com by mail. Upon receipt, we will apply it to your account and will mail you a reimbursement. For phone bookings, you must first provide us with a copy scanned and e-mail. The rebate amount will be deducted immediately and you must send us the original travel voucher within 7 days, failing that, the rebate amount will be automatically debited from your credit card.

For bookings over 45 days from departure and having paid the deposit only, on receipt of the original voucher by mail, we will apply the travel credit to your account and the balance payable at the time of final payment will be reduced.

For voucher issued by travel operators, it is possible to book with us online or by phone. You must pay all at once and send us the original travel voucher in the mail. Upon receipt, the wholesaler will proceed directly to the credit card used when booking. Only Caribe Sol will proceed with a refund check. Please note that some conditions apply, refer to the travel voucher for details. Some exceptions may apply credits trip, contact agent for more precision.

	6) We are a family of five (two adults and three children) what are the hotels / destinations that are suitable for our family.

To respond to such requests more precise we have created dedicated pages on the site, such as Family Vacations page.

This is of course just a small part! This is why you now have access to many channels for communication (forums, Facebook, twitter and now this blog!), Not only with the travel agency, but also you!

A special thanks to Annie, Chantal and Magali for providing me the information for writing this post.

Since February 14, Las Vegas - regarded by many as the city of all evil - now a museum of the Mafia, the Mob Museum. The new institution, which takes place in an old courthouse in the city includes the time tells of the famous Al Capone.

Why do the opening of the museum on February 14? Simply because this date is related to Valentine's Day massacre, which can be summarized as the climax of the war between the clans of Chicago at that time.

To promote this new museum in Las Vegas, the promoters have posted this video:

Of course, on you go to Las Vegas, there are the casinos open day and night, as well as Cirque du Soleil and Celine Dion!

Passage through customs is mostly seen as a necessary evil, which we want to get over as soon as possible. If you're one of those who travel regularly, especially to the United States, these inconveniences are only multiplied.

It is precisely to increase the processing speed, the Nexus system is set up by border agencies in both Canada and the United States. Obviously, to obtain this document, you must be able to show you’re a trustworthy person . Once this document in your hands, it will give you access to a dedicated queue, which should make it to reduce the processing time for each passenger. The Nexus system will be available for travel as land, sea than air travel.

The site of the border services agency gives you all the details: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/menu-eng.html

What is your favorite romantic travel destination?

Only a few days before Valentine's Day! Dream-day for those who will receive a gift! But preparations sometimes turn to the puzzle for those who offer. If your schedules permit you, a romantic travel is a wonderful idea.

But again, the list of possibilities can be very long! Let me make few suggestions to help make these moments something unforgettable!

Choose a hotel for adults only. This applies more if you're a parent, but you make this trip as a couple only. The quiet around the pool will make you appreciate even more this time.

Several locations have been specially designed to make you live unforgettable romantic holiday. Buccaneer's Club Med in Martinique is a good example, or Roatan in Honduras, recognized by many for the most beautiful corals in the world.

Consider adding a few inclusions when you’re booking your vacations. The last thing you want once there will break your head to find an event, or worse than the projected trip is already full! Several options are available on your favorite website or from travel agents. Having a boat trip with dolphins can leave memories for the most durable!

…But you can allow you an amount for few surprises. Conversely, you might as you keep an amount for inspiring ideas once there: Dinner on the beach, a massage, time at a spa, etc.

Very often, the required budget will not be very different to plan a romantic holiday. You just need a little imagination and some research into a moment that you will remember for years.

It's your turn: What's your favorite romantic travel idea?

In all comments you will write at the bottom of this post, we will give one 50$ voucher for your next purchase on Var Vacation website! The draw will take place monday feb. 13th at 12:00.

Mayan Riveria, Mexico: Beaches and history in the same travel package

The Mexican regions and of Playa Del Carmen and Mayan Riviera in Mexico are considered for their beaches and the oasis of relaxation offered to the very numerous travelers who visit this region every year. But often, especially when we travel in group with different interests, a complete week of beach can become long. Knowing the attractions near, in the peninsula of Yucatan, becomes then very useful! If you are fascinated by history, you will find in this Mexican region of which to occupy your thirst of discovery.

Tulum is at approximately one hour of road from Mayan RIviera. Several ruins are in this region of which some – make the place unique- directly by the sea. The most ancient Toltec’s constructions date the year 600 approximately. Numerous constructions are always still standing and visits with a local guide are available every day.

A little farther in land you will also find the former city of Chichen Itza, considered by most of the archaeologists as the main religious place of the Yucatan. It is on this site among others that you can see the very impressive temple of the warriors Jaguar (photo). Since 2007, the site is a part of 7 new world wonders according to 7wonders.org.

The persons in charge of the Mexican tourism expect that these historic places will be much visited this year. The end of the Mayan calendar, on December 21st, 2012, makes so that very numerous travelers will want to go on the vestiges of these formerly rich and powerful civilization, who knows maybe to find a certain redemption before the end …

Do you believe in it? ;)

If you like discovering heritage and history, a trip to Venice, near Italian lakes, will delight you. They are real parts of the history of Europe that you will be able to discover. This is one where the Doge’s Palace in Venice.
This millennium institution, which the most recent construction dates back to 1340, was originally used for the administration of the Venetian region, where the Doge was the leader. Even today, this palace is considered as one of the greatest work of Venice, both for its architecture with marble and paintings.
If you have a romantic heart ladies, we cannot ignore that only one person has never escape from these places otherwise dismal: Giacomo Casanova. At that time, as with other convicted, he will have had to cross the Bridge of Sighs to get to the prison of the shot just outside the main palace.
Today historic sites and museums at a time, the Doge's Palace in Venice certainly provides a vision of the history of Italy.

The Rio carnival is surely the best known in our northern regions. But did you know that Dominican Republic also have its own Carnival?

During february, several regions are in holidays!
Of course, the festivities take place in Santo Domingo the capital. Do not miss one of the busiest streets, George Washington Avenue (the Malecon). But you also have the opportunity to meet all sorts of characters at the park Enriquillo. Although there are activities for several weeks, wear special attention on february 27 for the parade which takes place on the anniversary of independence and proclamation of the Republic. At that time, you will discover a colorful folklore, festivities flavored DR! Some of the traditional carnival masks are on display at Museum in Santo Domingo.

But the most popular of all activities is the carnival of La Vega, which takes place in the center of the Dominican Republic. Masks traditionally worn in La Vega are impressive because they represent horned devils (diablos cojuelos). Every Sunday in February, during the processions, the devils look extravagant fishermen in the crowd and charged them with their "bladder", kind of large clubs, as punishment for their sins!
Let yourself be carried by the heady rhythms of meringue and salsa! The Dominicans saw Carnival as a celebration. They flock into the streets, in private clubs and anywhere you can celebrate by wearing the mask of characters typical of the Dominican carnival.

Don't be alone for planing your solo travel

About 20% of our customers are traveling alone. But the vast majority of travel websites focus almost exclusively on travel as a couple or family in the way of presenting the offers from their site. Let's take a closer look ...

For many of you, you simply want to find a hotel in your vacation destination that will welcome you by not charging any extra even if you book a simgle occupancy room. Some hotels permit this at any time, others only with few tour operators following a special agreement. The travel industry and their actors work in an environment in which form it is easy to get lost.

If you have recognized this, you will be pleased to know that this week we have simplified you the task. Indeed, we have created a page dedicated to solo travelers. We now update a list of hotels that meet your specific criteria as well as companies that offer this option.

In addition, the form found on the right of this new page is optimized according to these criterias. So you just simply select your preferences to find the best possible choices.

You know other situations where you would like research to be simplified? Let us know! Our goal is to offer the best possible experience, for example with this page dedicated to last minute offers.

The importance of travel insurance outside your country

When we make an important purchase, there is always somewhere a vendor to add an extended warranty or insurance of any kind. However, there are some rare exceptions, and travel insurance is included. It's a little known fact, but travel agents have a professional obligation to always recommend travel insurance to their customers.

The main problem is when we are in another country. The laws are not the same, the costs can vary widely, but most importantly, the coverage to which we are accustomed no longer applies. Although it is hoped that this will prove to be an unnecessary precaution, it is important to do some checking.

1. Validate your current insurance

Many insurances or credit cards (especially gold and platinum) offer travel insurance included. Depending on your needs, the country visited and included protections, that’s may be sufficient. Travel agents will often ask you to compare your current coverage with that is offered. If you are already aware of your coverage, you will know that it will be useless, or the contrary, it will fill an important gap.

If you are booking for several people, it is also important to ensure that all your partners are also covered by adequate travel insurance.

2. Ask specific questions

You too, can come up with your list of questions to ensure a good protection! A good agent that is not there just for the commission will take the time to respond appropriately. For example, what are the requirements for you to be repatriated by air ambulance rather than having to remain hospitalized abroad.

3. Assess all risks

Many travel insurance plans are available as needed: Emergency Medical, insurance package higher cancellation / interruption insurance travel. For example, some insurance programs offer options of cancellation or return ticket urgent not only for you but also in the case of the death of a loved one.

4. Are you a frequent traveler?

For people who travel regularly in the year, there are plans annual insurance cheaper than taking each time a particular insurance.

5. Know what is covered

If you leave Quebec province for example, for a few days or weeks, your health insurance card entitles you to reimbursement of health services covered by health insurance in Quebec. In most cases, the Régie does only reimburse a portion of the cost of health services received outside of Quebec. You must pay the difference if you did not purchase adequate travel insurance. This could in the worst cases jeopardize your finances for years!
Governance of health insurance in Quebec pays on its own scales:
• Maximum of $ 100 per day of hospitalization
• Maximum of $ 50 per day for outpatient consultations
Taking a concrete example of hospital in Florida for a fractured Tibia: The invoice will total $ 4,679, but not the control that you will repay $ 170. We must therefore pay $ 4,509
Also, it is important to know that drugs purchased outside of Quebec, even prescribed by doctors are not reimbursed by the Board, as the cost of ambulance transportation.

You can also consult the Ombudsman for life and Health Insurance for any question or complaint about insurance concerns.

Technology moves increasingly in all aspects of life. Leisure and travel is far from an exception! Use of mobile devices such as iPad, have increased by 500% since last year on the Var Vacations website. Social networks, especially Facebook, are also more and more used, among others as a channel to talk to travel agents. That said, more traditional tools such as forum still continue to be widely used.

This trend is also observed elsewhere. According to the American association of travel agents, more than 2/3 of travel agencies in the United States are now using Web 2.0 tools in their operations.

Some tips for planning your next south vacations

Planning a trip to the south or to sunny destination can be a source of stress. Is this really what I reach? Are the conditions of the hotel were as expected? Do I pay the best price? Here are some tips to help you achieve the ultimate goal: fully enjoy your vacation!

Get a list of what is essential for you

Within few minutes you can have access to hundreds offers on a website. It then becomes easy to be absorbed only by the notion of price rather than what you really want as travel. This can then become a source of disappointment.

• Do you prefer an all-inclusive plan or a kitchenette in your room?
• Do you wish to play golf, scuba diving or windsurfing?
• Do you want to spend the week at the beach or prefer discover other attractions such historic sites?

Answering these questions before starting your research will save you both time loss and disappointment.

Comments and ratings will give you a good indications

Travel guides and forums like these on VarVacations website are a gold mine of information. In addition, people there are passionate about travel and love to share their experiences. Do not hesitate to take advantage of this and ask questions.
In addition, the vast majority of pictures that go there are original and have not had any editing. It is therefore an objective source of landscape you reach for. Again, those who have posted these pictures will tell you with pleasure in what circumstances the photo was taken or if weather conditions are the same at all times.

Check for special conditions on the target country

Do you suffer from allergies? The political situation in the country to visit is it unstable? What documents are required? It is important to do your homework and make sure not to get caught at the last minute. Here are two useful resources in this direction:

	• Public Health Agency
• Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The price today of will maybe not be the price tomorrow

This is often a source of inconvenience. We did a search, hotel activities and the price agreed. Perfect! I can show it all tomorrow to my friend and we will reserved at this moment. Systems of current supply and demand mean that prices vary a bit like the stock market. Even worse, some sites recover prices once a day and gives you the current price at the time of taking your details.

Once more, visit the forums and ask questions will help you to validate if you find a good offer. Many sites also offer RSS feeds of their best offers.

It is better to book sooner rather than later

The last-minute deals are increasingly rare. This is partly explained by the tactics of overbooking by airlines, but also through more effective management and computer models to forecast demand. Therefore the trend is now a bargain on the side of advance reservations. This guaranteed income to the company and allows planning with fewer losses.

These are quite simple tricks, but they can help you plan the best trip possible, no worries!

But this situation will change on April 30th, according to Foreign Affairs Canada. Until this date, a proof of citizenship and a valid photo identification (such a driver's licence) is enought.

Note: If your're going to Dominican Republic as a tourist, you'll be asked to buy a tourist card, at a cost of 10$ US.
